Political Career and Accomplishments
Beginning of Political Career
Although Kuldeep took interest in politics from a very young age, he first became fully involved in 1987, when he campaigned extensively with his father. For almost a decade, he looked after his father’s constituency and it was during this time that he was tutored in the matters of the state.

This was one success that enhanced his image as a politician significantly both in the eyes of his people and the media.
Kuldeep won his first Lok Sabha election from Bhiwani, Haryana. It was an extraordinary achievement in more than one way:
- It was the first time in the history of Haryana that families of three former Chief Ministers were contesting from the same constituency. It was a head-on contest between the sons of Mr. Bhajan Lal, Mr. OP Chautala and Mr. Bansi Lal.
- The constituency posed various challenges for a newcomer like Kuldeep:
- It is a completely Jat dominated constituency and
- It is the former Chief Minister Mr. Bansi Lal’s home constituency.
- Mr. Ajay Chautala, son of ruling Chief Minister Mr. O.P.Chautala was the sitting Member of Parliament.
- Last but not the least, Congress had not won from that seat in the last 15 years.
- First time in history the constituency chose a non-jat leader by supporting Kuldeep with overwhelming majority.
- This constituency was under the close eyes of the media as well as large scale violence was expected due to the sheer profile of the people who were contesting.
Kuldeep’s win in Bhiwani brought about a significant development in state politics. It proved to be a catalyst for the merger of the Haryana Vikas Party with the Indian National Congress in Haryana.
